Welcome to Planet. We believe in using space to help life on Earth.

Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. This constellation delivers an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform to authoritative figures in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. We are both a space company and data company all rolled into one.

Customers and users across the globe use Planet‘s data to develop new technologies, drive revenue, power research, and solve our world’s toughest obstacles.

As we control every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering, our office is a truly inspiring mix of experts from a variety of domains.

We have a people-centric approach toward culture and community and we strive to iterate in a way that puts our team members first and prepares our company for growth. Join Planet and be a part of our mission to change the way people see the world.

Planet is a global company with employees working remotely world wide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, and The Netherlands.

About the Role:

Come and help us to build our customer platform and make an impact on Earth!

Planet monitors the Earth by observing the entire Earth everyday. The market for these insights is new and therefore requires engineering that embraces change as we establish product market fit. Customer platform engineers are focused on continuously improving the value we deliver to customers, increasing the market for the earth observation industry.

As a full stack software engineer, you will help customers by building the critical end-to-end applications that they need to use Planet’s products. Planet delivers imagery to our customers in many forms, including our APIs, our SDK, and our web apps.

In this role, you will be challenged to: build and evolve consumer products across our engineering stack (i.e., backend, APIs, frontend), contribute a sharp product and business sense to the team, and think big yet deliver value incrementally.

Impact You’ll Own:

  • Work as an integral member of a cross-functional team focused on improving customer journeys that allow them to intuitively search for and analyze imagery in products like Planet Explorer.
  • Operate as a “glue” engineer to ensure backend and frontend stacks work well together to delight customers
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure our systems remain up 24/7
  • Collaborate with product and other cross-functional stakeholders to co-create an impactful customer experience.

What You Bring:

Experience in:

  • JavaScript, including concepts like asynchronous programming, closures, types, and ES6.
  • React, complete understanding of its main fundamentals like Virtual DOM, component lifecycle, etc.
  • Python, NodeJS, or Go
  • Designing and evolving public APIs
  • Working in cross-functional teams that put customer requirements first
  • Adaptability and openness to changes and challenges
  • A positive, can-do attitude to work
  • Clear communication skills that resonate with engineers, cross functional stakeholders, and executives
  • BS in Computer Science, related technical field or equivalent practical experience

What Makes You Stand Out:

Experience in:

  • Building and deploying applications to a cloud service provider (AWS, Google Cloud).
  • PostGreSQL
  • Geospatial experience (GDAL, OGR, etc.)
  • Building applications with OpenLayers or other slippy map libraries.
  • API documentation and written communication
  • Oncall experience

Benefits While Working at Planet:

  • Comprehensive Health Plan
  • Wellness program and onsite massages in specific offices
  • Flexible Time Off
  • Recognition Programs
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Learning and Tuition Reimbursement
  • Parental Leave
  • Offsites and Happy Hours
  • Volunteering Benefits
